Haberdashery and Hawks

Our, ‘Shop Til’ you Drop’ Auction (closing on Wednesday 25th June) has an amazing, vintage habadashery cabinet.  At 78″ high and 71″ wide it will offer plenty of storage.

Believed to originate from the Anglo-French word, ‘habertas’ which means small ware, in the thirteenth century a haberdasher would sell items such as hawks bells, swords and mousetraps, as well as pins, cloth and buttons.  As time passed however, the habadasher became more associated with sewing, dressmaking and knitting.

The cabinets feature multiple drawers , sometimes with glass fronts, and shelves and cupboards which allows for organised storage and easy access to all of the supplies within it.  Cabinets are made from wood; mostly oak or mahogony, with attention to detail in the craftmanship such as metal nameplates and copper handles.

The design and functionalty of these cabinets continue to inspire modern storage solutions but the originals remain a popular, ‘vintage buy’ for their charm and practicality.

You may no longer need somewhere to store your falconery accessories, such as hawk bells, but for a unique solution for your socks what could be better?
