Brighton Pavillion

Isle of Wight Auctions recently took a ‘team building’ trip to Brighton to see the Royal Pavillion.  Originally buit as a seaside retreat for for King George IV it started as a fairly basic holiday home, but soon became more elaborate when John Nash took over the decoration; and there were certainly some jaw dropping moments as we walked round.

The exterior is stunning but once inside it gets even better; from elaborote, and huge, chandeliers to vibrant coloured carpets and a mix of Indian and Chinese architectural styles the whole palace looked like something out of a storybook.

The pavillion is full of history and we were very interested to learn that from 1914-1916 it was used as a hospital for Indian servicemen fighting for the British Army on the battlefields of the Western Front.  It must have seemed like another world to the soldiers recuperating there.

If you decide to visit yourself make sure to leave enough time and not to rush, there is much to enjoy and learn about.  And when you have finished there are plenty of great restaurants and bars in Brighton to sit and relax and reflect on all the amazing interiors you have seen.
